2017 Peter J Greve TKE Alumni Scholarship awared to two outstanding High School Seniors

BEN JOHNSON

Benjamin Johnson, son of Steve and Kathy Johnson of Elkhorn, Nebraska,  is a 2017 graduate from Boy’s Town High School in Omaha; and will continue the family tradition as his Papa, Bruce Barlow, Mom, Kathy, and sister, Karly are all Bearcats!  Ben was nominated by Delta Nu alum, Merle Jones, scroll 541.

While in high school Ben was very active in baseball and hockey, is a member of the National Honor Society and made the All Academic Team for Outstanding Academic Excellence for the Omaha Hockey Club.  Ben graduated with a 3.41 GPA (from 9th thru 12th grade) while still managing part-time employment.

Kathy writes:  “He has a true passion to help others, especially children and teens.”  “He is excited to pursue his career in behavioral science at Northwest Missouri State University,” including working with troubled youth and coaching baseball after college.  Ben plans to be involved at NWMSU, work with Special Olympics and has already applied for part-time employment to help defray his college expenses.  Congratulations Ben!

MAX ROSS

Beginning in grade school, Maxwell Ross has only missed Bearcat football games to play in his own school’s games; and he played a lot of post-season as his teams were Conference or District Champions 7 times, plus Sectional qualifiers and State runner-up in football.  Max, the son of Clint and Kim Ross, was a 3 sport athlete at Lawson, MO High School:  Football, Basketball, Baseball; earning many accolades including Class II 1st team All-State Football DB and Class III 1st team All-State for Baseball.

Max also excelled in the classroom, graduating with a 4.264 (weighted) GPA; was a class officer 4 years (2 times class president); active in community service projects plus, tutored students in the A+ grant and StEP-UP student mentoring programs.  Max’s principal describes him as “…always leading by example, with great class, discipline, heart, determination, and work ethic.”

Along with trying out for the Bearcat baseball team, while at Northwest, Max will study Mass Media because he describes his life goals “…really quite simple.  I want to give back to the activities that shaped me as a person, and I want to instill in young adults some of the same skills and abilities I learned as a participant.”  He plans to do this by coaching as a graduate assistant and then as a broadcaster.

On a personal note, through Saturday’s Bearcat football games I’ve come to know Max, his Dad and proud Grand Pa and nominator, Mick Ross, scroll  397, all 3 diehard Bearcat fans.  Even in grade school Max was the person we’d call on for a player’s name (Bearcat or opponent), stats, or even what play should be run.  Max is everything his high school principal describes; he will be an asset to Northwest and will make a great coach and broadcaster.

Delta Nu Alums are proud to name these two fine young men the 2017 recipients of the Peter J Greve Memorial TKE Alumni Scholarship; both are legacies, Ben’s grandfather is: Bruce Barlow, 533 and Max’s grandfather:  Mick Ross, 397.  Northwest is a great fit for them; these two will do great things at Northwest and have great futures ahead.  Congratulations Ben and Max!
