July 2011 Delta Nu e-Review

The new Delta Nu E review was sent to more than 800 Fraters via eamil on July 26.  If you did not receive your copy, please update your email address at this address: Click Here

Fraters,

Happy birthday America! I hope you all had a great Fourth of July. On July 1st, my wife, Erin, and I welcomed our third daughter, Lauren Irene, into the world. Mom and daughter are doing well and her sisters are having fun with their new baby.

Since our last communication, there is plenty to report on. There was another successful golf tournament – with over 100 Fraters in attendance! Great job Frater Brent Steffens!  Frater Nathan Welch released the redesigned website, and more than 50 Fraters got together this past weekend in Maryville and Kansas City for work weekend and the Reunion at O’Dowd’s.

Additionally, I am again looking for someone to take over the newsletter editor role. If you have an interest or think you know someone that might, please let me know.  I am already spending time I don’t have to work on this one.

When next we chat, the actives will have returned to school, moved into the house and completed the Fall rush. Good luck in advance to our young Fraters.  We will also be looking ahead at Homecoming and we need someone to run this year’s Homecoming event. If you have an interest in being this year’s homecoming coordinator, please contact Ron Beaver (816-304-5354 or rb64089@gmail.com) or Brad Shelton at Brad.Shelton@nwtke.com.

Thanks again for your continued readership.  There are many requests for volunteers or coordinators, so please read through and if you can help, please contact Brad Shelton at brad.shelton@nwtke.com.

Golf Tournament Recap – Brent Steffens, 1384, mrbrentsteffens@yahoo.com

"A Year of Firsts" at the 16th Annual TKE Golf Tourney - 2011 TKE Delta Nu Memorial Scramble Recap

This year's golf tournament was full of all the great traditions that have been created through years past.  The day was full of "back when I was in school" stories, sun tans and wind burns, reunions of lost fraters, and continual claims of "I'll see you back here next year!" But it was this year's newest traditions that helped make the 16th Annual TKE Golf Tourney one of the best.

Online Registration

Signing up for this year's tournament was a breeze. With the revamping of the Delta Nu website and creation of an online registration form with PayPal options, a record number of 92 golfers were in attendance once again. On-site check-in was quick and easy, allowing all the attendees to grab brunch, reintroduce themselves to their golf clubs on the range, stock up their drink coolers, and begin catching up with old friends.

Announcements and Honored Guests

The Delta Nu Alumni Association (DNAA) addressed the chapter, and shared all the great happenings since last year's tournament. Highlights included details on the July Work Weekend, plans for homecoming and the Fall Classic at Arrowhead, and a State Of The Union of the active chapter.

But the highlight of the announcements was having from Northwest President Dr. John Jasinski join us for the day. President Jasinski shared his excitement to become more involved with the TKE organization, exciting plans for the upcoming university school year, and his challenge to all TKE alumni to continue to live by the motto "Once a Bearcat, Always a Bearcat."

The DNAA also honored the service of frater Michael Reiff for 15 years of tournament directorship, by awarding him with the Honorary Tee Shot to ceremonially begin this year's tournament play. President Jasinski followed with a second Honorary Tee Shot, and play was underway.

Tournament Highlights

With the addition of a few new donation opportunities, ideal scoring conditions, and accusations of "cheating", this year's winning team posted an all-time low score in tournament history.

-22 > First Place Championship Flight: Chad Gamblin, Brian Sanley, Carson Riedel and Brent Steffens

-20 > Second Place Championship Flight: Mike Reiff, Kevin Malick, Todd Kraaz and Patrick Halsted

-8 > First Place 'B' Flight: Jeff Borchardt, John Jasinski, Steve Brightwell and Alan Nicholas.

Some of the days greatest golf shots were awarded through individual pin prizes.

·         Longest Drive: Kevin Malick (Hole 7) and Carson Riedel (Hole 10)

·         Closet to the Pin: Bill Copic (Hole 5), Ricky Boedeker (Hole 8), Darwin Rold (Hole 11) and Todd Kraaz (Hole 15)

·         Closet 2nd Shot: Craig Poldberg (Hole 3) and Jim Moore (Hole 14)

·         Longest Putt: Kevin Smith (Hole 18)

Donations Raised

Although laughs, stories and memories are key parts of the golf day, it's the recognition of fraters who have past to the Chapter Eternal that is most important.  Nearly $1,400 was raised for the Memorial Donor Wall through the purchasing of mulligans, tee box markers, and outright donations. These funds are reinvested into house, aiding with the financial commitment to updates and renovations. An additional $1,100 was raised and will be put in the Alumni Association coffers for use the Delta Nu Review mailers, the website and other special projects Alumni Association members will see fit to underwrite.

Next Year – The 17th Annual Delta Nu Memorial Scramble – June 1st, 2012

Next year's tournament has been scheduled for the first Friday of June.  Mark your calendars, tell your wife, call your lost pledge brothers, and make sure not to miss the flagship TKE-Delta Nu brotherhood event. It's truly a day that is not to be missed!

For more information on the golf tournament, contact Brent Steffens at (816) 808-9600or mrbrentsteffens@yahoo.com

Board of Advisors (BOA) President’s Report – Mark Witthar, 853, mwitthar@ford.com

Fraters of Delta Nu:

I am pleased to report that the Board of Advisors and the active chapter are doing very well.  The most important items we have currently are:

•                     Work Weekend

•                     Rush

Work Weekend

Thanks to everyone that planned and participated in this past weekend’s alumni/active work weekend. Brad Shelton, Steve Fox and Carson Riedel worked very hard to set up a busy but productive weekend. On Friday, July 15th and Saturday, July 16th we painted, replaced light fixtures and in general, made the house truly look great.  Other items planned to be complete were the replacement of carpet and flooring, replacing ceiling tiles, fixing entryway tiles, creating a "frater lounge" complete with a big screen TV and couches and getting the entire house cleaned prior to the actives returning in the fall. In total, we planned on making almost $20,000 in improvements/updates to the house. We can do this because we have a full house and the men are paying their rent! What a novel concept!

Rush

The improvements being made on the house will surely help with our rush efforts. In addition the actives are planning a rush "seminar" for the actives just prior to students coming back for class. This fall rush is a critical time for the active chapter. If you know of someone that is coming to Northwest and you think we should talk to about joining the fraternity please send a note to myself at mwitthar@ford.com or Brad Shelton at bshelton@datasourcetech.com  We need to take a strong class in the fall. Fall rush is now when the largest classes are taken and with a concentrated, well-planned effort we will continue to make our fraternity strong.

I want to also thank everyone who donates time and money to the fraternity we all love. There are too many to list in this note but you know who you are and that your generosity is genuinely appreciated.

YITB, Mark Witthar, 853, BOA Chairman

For more information about the DNAA or BOA, contact Mark Witthar, 853 mwitthar@ford.com

  • Short Term Capital Improvements    $3,354
  • Long Term Capital Improvements     $5,594
  • Emergency Fund                                  $4,208

House Report – Steve Fox, 806, tke806@gmail.comand Mike Gallagher, 815, skkmg@centurytel.net

Supplies and materials were delivered and installed during the work weekend on July 15th and 16th.  Our goal was to paint all rooms and hallways, along with putting a fresh coat on the Chapter Room and installing new lighting throughout the inside and outside of the House. We pulled up the hallway carpet so new carpet and vinyl can be installed the week of July 25th. This was a rewarding weekend full of bonding -- so plan on attending this event next summer. We need a lot of manpower to accomplish next year’s list. The Housing and Work Weekend Teams will appreciate any and all Fraters willing to help.

The Active Chapter met their goals last year and the Frater Lounge is close to becoming a reality. The 46” TV and couches have been ordered and are waiting for installation after the completion of the Work Weekend’s projects.

Next year’s lease agreements have been finalized and invoices have been sent home. A move-in date has been set for August 11th. I’m sure that when the Actives return for the new school year they will be impressed with all the improvements that were accomplished over the summer.

I want to thank everyone who has been involved with this year’s renovation project; the living environment at the House will be drastically improved! A special thank you needs to go out to Frater Carson Riedel for everything he has done with the ordering of supplies and goods for this project.

Lastly, we now have a high speed commercial router and server rack installed in the house so internet access issues will be a thing of the past. This was paid for with Special project funds from TKE International and installed and maintained by Ryan Jackson.

For more information on the Property Committee contact Steve Fox, 806, tke806@gmail.comor Mike Gallagher, 815, skkmg@centurytel.net

Active Chapter President’s Report – Gunner Sumy, 1564, gunnersumy@hotmail.com

Most men of the Delta Nu active chapter have departed from Maryville for the summer, but many remain hard at work with summer jobs and responsibilities. Some of the fraternal business that actives are overseeing for the summer is our Incoming Freshman Scholarship. We have sent out postcards asking eligible applicants to apply online and we will begin to narrow applicants in August. A $100 Scholarship will be awarded towards the beginning of the school year to a candidate that displays leadership, academic responsibility, and embodies our fraternal values.

There will be four members of the executive board traveling to San Antonio for our 2011 Conclave August 4th - 7th. This is an excellent opportunity for us to pick up on ideas to bring back to delta Nu and the Northwest campus. Additionally it will allow our chapter to mingle with TKEs from across the nation and do a little networking. We hope to receive a few awards as well, for another successful year. (To help the active chapter with registration fees and travel to Conclave, Regional Leadership Conferences, and other educational opportunities, please visit http://www.nwtke.com/content/special-projects and make your tax deductible donation to the Special Projects fund.)

Active members are eager for the upcoming school year and move-in day for the house is set for August 11th. Starting August 21st, there will be Rush training, executive board (officer) orientation, and a housing orientation. Classes start on August 29th.

We hope to have the biggest rush class on campus this fall and in doing so we need help from all fraters. If you have any information on individuals that would be an asset to the fraternity please let me know.

For more information on the active chapter, contact Prytanis Gunner Sumy 1564, gunnersumy@hotmail.com

Delta Nu Alumni Association – Brad Shelton, 651, brad.shelton@nwtke.com

With almost 6 full months to go, we are only 21 new members away from our membership goal of 200 dues paying Delta Nu Fraters!  We have received annual dues totaling more than $17,500 from 180 Alumni from across the U.S.! As you know, these dues go to pay for the new web site development, produce and mail the bi-annual newsletter, produce bi-monthly e-Newsletters like this one and maintain the Delta Nu Frater Database, not to mention supporting the fund raising efforts of the TKE Scholarship, the Pete Greve Incoming Freshman Scholarship, the Special Projects Fund and the Capital Improvements Fund. Just as important, your annual dues support the efforts of the Social Committee to bring events to cities near you!

In the last 45 days, we added more than ten new alumni to the growing list of dues-paying members and I received commitments to join the DNAA from five more Fraters at the golf outing!

One point of clarification, if I may.  The dues we collect are the operating capital for the Alumni Association and the Property Board.  None of your dues money is used for capital improvements, or any other housing or property related expense.  We are totally separate from the Property Board that manages the house. The Property Board receives its cash for house improvements and maintenance from the surplus of rent over expenses.  For the first time in many years, we have a surplus and that is what is being used to fund the work weekend.  We are, however, for the first time, sponsoring the Kansas City TKE Delta Nu Reunion that before had been privately funded.  This event will be held on July 16th. The Alumni Association will cover the cost of some appetizers but the drinks will be on a cash bar basis. So please plan to attend.  For more information on this check out the social calendar on the Delta Nu web site – http://www.nwtke.com/event

Please join me in welcoming the newest members to the Alumni Association:

264         Richard Jackson - 3Yr

276         Floyd "Ed" Propst - 1Yr

334         Larry Gerdes - 3Yr

522         Lawrence Turk - 3Yr

727         Don Edwards - 3Yr

812         John Pitts - 2Yr

974         Jeff Greiner - 3Yr

1167       Christopher Johnson - 3Yr

1420       Nick Brummel - 1Yr

Peter J. Greve Memorial TKE Alumni Scholarship, Bruce Barlow, 533, tkedn533@comcast.net

Fraters,

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer of 2011.  Our hearts go out those fraters whose lives are affected by the record high waters of the Missouri River as it flows along the Nebraska and Iowa borders and now encroaches upon Missouri.  Daily I watch the updates reported by Todd Andrews of KETV channel 7 in Omaha.  Watching Todd brings back memories of the work weekend at Pete Greve's the weekend before his passing.  Todd was the reporter and due to continued interest, the story is still aired today.

The state of Pete's brainchild, now called the Peter J. Greve TKE Alumni of Northwest Missouri State University Scholarship, is good.  Since its inception, we've awarded four $1,000 scholarships to outstanding high school seniors that enrolled at NWMSU.  We are approximately halfway to our goal of the scholarship fund becoming self-sustaining.  This Fall, we are planning for a major fund raising drive so when tapped please give consideration to making a one-time large tax deductible donation to this tremendous undertaking.  The scholarship is funded and managed by Delta Nu alums and the recipients must be nominated by a Delta Nu alumnus; so the success of our scholarship depends entirely on all of us.

I pledge to each of you that once the Pete Greve/TKE Scholarship becomes self-sustaining I won't be asking for further large donations...TKE WORD!

YITB, Dick Westbrook, 675

The 2012 application will soon be posted to the Peter J. Greve Memorial TKE Alumni Scholarship webpage: http://www.nwtke.com/content/scholarship. The application deadline is February 1st.

TKE House Capital Improvements – Steve Moss, 927, semoss@mchsi.com

Progress continues with the TKE House Capital Improvement Committee.  Many thanks go out to two new members of the committee.  Fraters Jason Klindt, 1278, and Brian Carroll, 1354, have joined our committee to help steer the support for this essential part of taking on improvement projects at our TKE home 555 West Ninth Street.

We are in the beginning stages of some great improvement projects at the TKE house.  This summer we’ll be finishing the TKE Board Room.  We are hoping that the trophy case and composite frame will be restored and over the next eight months.

Also, if there is support, we’ll be putting up a storage shed for TKE property, thanks to the efforts of Frater Brian Lohafer, 564, and the Building Trades class at the school where he teaches.

These projects are possible with the financial support of Delta Nu alumni these past few years.  As always, we truly appreciate your support and are proud to announce that 17 alumni made out pledge cards for contributions to the Capital Improvement Fund at the recent Delta Nu Memorial Golf Tournament on June 3rd.  Collectively, they committed over $1,200 toward these projects.

As a reminder, all contributions to the TKE House Capital Improvement Fund and New House Fund are recognized on The Richard W. Wiles Teke for Life Donor Wall at the house.  Recognition levels for cumulative contributions are at $500, $1,000, $2,500, $5,000 and $10,000.

Support for the TKE House Capital Improvement Fund can be sent to:

Frater Chris Holder-Board of Advisors Treasurer

12480 South Greenwood, Olathe, KS 66062

Please make your check payable to: TKE BOA and write “Capital Improvements” on the memo line, OR

Contributions can be made through pay pal at:http://www.nwtke.com/content/tke-house-capital-improvements. Please scroll a little down the page to find the box where you can donate – you can even make your donation in the name of another.

Thank you for supporting the TKE House through the Capital Improvements Fund!

Yours in the bond, The TKE House Capital Improvement Committee

Philanthropy, Special Projects Education Fund – Scott Keilbey, 666, skeilbey@tnemec.com

I am pleased to report that we had a record number of Delta Nu Fraters make donations to the TKE Education Foundation (TEF) and then directly to the Delta Nu Special Projects Fund.  Fraters making donations to the TEF can designate up to 100% of their donation to the Delta Nu Special Projects Fund.  We than can use this money for educational purposes like Conclave or Regional leadership conferences or other approved expenses.

Donations can be made to http://www.nwtke.com/content/special-projects and your tax deductible donation will be sent to TKE National or you can donate directly to TKE National’s website at www.tke.org.  Please make sure you designate some part of your donation to the Delta Nu Special Projects Fund.  The current fund balance is just over $3,700.  Our goal for 2011 is to be able to support 4 attendees to the Regional leadership conference and to provide educational support to the active chapter.  Here is the list of the donors for 2010-2011.

Web Redesign and Updates, Michael Reiff, 1120, mwreiff@charter.net,

The redesign of the Delta Nu website has been completed! It looks completely awesome and we’ve gotten feedback from young and old on how much improved the site is to access and navigate.

If you have not checked out the site in a while, please take a little bit of time to do so, and remember to get yourself a login to the site as we will soon be making some more pages and features secured from the general public.

Areas that we hope to improve soon are the Photo Gallery, the Delta Nu Museum, the Delta Nu Reviews and build upon the Marketplace.

Any feedback or questions you have can be directed to me atmwreiff@charter.net.

Delta Nu Marketplace

Speaking of the Marketplace, this is a new feature for the website. Located in the Alumni section of the website, the Marketplace will be your page for “yellow pages” listings of Frater-owned businesses, a place to buy TKE shirts, rah rahs, old golf tournament items, etc., as well as job postings.

Our hope is that if you are looking for someone to fulfill a particular service or if you’re looking for a particular product, that you would check out the Marketplace first.

Currently, the only thing on the Marketplace page is the business listings with a couple of example, but we hope to expand services later. Posting on the page is currently reserved for Delta Nu Alumni Association members in good standing, but all Fraters can view the listings.

For more information on the Martketplace or Web site, contact Michael Reiff, 1120, mwreiff@charter.net

CompositeRestoration Project, Bobbie D Nielsen, 640,nielsenbd1@yahoo.com

Fraters,

The Composite Restoration project is going very well. Much has been accomplished so far, and there is still quite a bit to do to get a house full of composites or representations of them.

Currently, the following composites are mounted on the walls of the house: 84-85, 90-91, 91-92, 93-94, 96-97, 97-98, 98-99, 99-00, 00-01, 01-02, 02-03, 03-04, 04-05, 05-06, 06-07, 07-08, 09-10, and 10-11.

Composites in my possession that have been cleaned, missing pictures replaced, and new plexi-glass inserted: 82-83, 86-87, 94-95, 95-96, and the picture of our Founders.

Frater Brad Shelton has reproduced framed 2'x3' composites of 76-77, 78-79, 79-80, 80-81, and 81-82.  Frater Ed Propst has donated a 2'x3' framed '66 composite. These were hung Work Weekend on July 15th and 16th along with 1955, 1959, 1963, 1967, 1970, and 1975 8.5"x11" Tower representations that Frater Hal Martens has produced and forwarded to me.  All of these are up, and we will update the composite page on the web (http://www.nwtke.com/content/composites) and update this list in the next Delta Nu Review with the specific locations and officers on each composite.

Thank you to those who have assisted or donated towards this project to this point.

We also are having an online auction for the 2’x3’ reproduced 1980-81 composite. If you are not the current winning bidder for this composite, please visit:   http://www.nwtke.com/content/composite-project-auction-form   (You may need to cut and paste this link into your browser).

Thanks to all of the bidders so far: Todd Schuler, Tad Trecker, Steve Fox and Brad Shelton.

The TKE Delta Nu Online Museum

We are looking for contributions to the TKE Delta Nu Online Museum. If you have old newsletters, news clippings, t-shirts, posters/flyers, composites, pictures, etc., we would love to get the images and scans of them into the museum. Please contact Brad Shelton, our acting curator, at brad.shelton@nwtke.com! We are looking for a curator to manage this important part of Delta Nu History and hope to have many of these items on line before the end of 2011.  If you have some skills with digital imagery and scanning, please contact Brad to see how you can help with this important project.

TKE “Did You Know” – Dennis Cox, 659, dennisc@northwestmissouri.com

Did you know….that 18 months ago, we began the new Delta Nu Alumni Association membership drive. In this time, we have received annual dues totaling more than $18,000 from 180 Alumni from across the U.S.! These dues go to fund web site development, produce the bi-annual newsletter, produce monthly e-Newsletters like this one and maintain the Delta Nu Frater Database, not to mention supporting the fund raising efforts of the TKE Scholarship, the Pete Greve Incoming Freshman Scholarship, the Special Projects Fund and the Capital Improvements Fund. This makes Delta Nu the LARGEST Alumni Association in the TKE Nation!  Thanks for your support.
