Introduction – Michael Reiff, 1120, mwreiff@charter.net

Fraters, hello to you all and happy March – March madness, the Ides of March, St. Patrick’s Day, what a month!  I’m writing this on the day of the humbling events of the 8.9 earthquake in Japan and just thinking how impressive Mother Earth is with her power. Please keep all of those people and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Speaking of family, I am taking this opportunity to announce you that mine will be adding one in June and that I need to take a step back from my Delta Nu responsibilities for a while as I expect my free time to become non-existent.  So, after 15 years, I have officially handed over the reins of the Delta Nu Memorial Scramble golf tournament to Frater Brent Steffens, 1364, my assistant for the past four or five years.  The tournament is in very capable hands and he has some great changes in mind to grow the tournament.  With June 3rd around the corner, you will be seeing more and more from Brent with details and registration.  Thanks Brent!

Additionally, Frater Ryan Jackson, 1547 is coming on board to help with the strategy and development of the website.  I will still help with content, but Ryan is better suited for this role.  Nathan Welch, 1386 is still involved, but I honestly did not have the expertise that either Ryan or Nathan have.

Finally, the Delta Nu Reviews – I am still looking for someone that is willing to take this over.  With two printed and mailed Delta Nu Reviews and four electronic editions every year, there is a time commitment involved.  If you have an interest in doing this and continue this great tradition of Delta Nu, please contact myself, Brad Shelton, 651, or Mark Witthar, 853 soon.  My fear is that in June, my time will become so short that I will not have any time (or energy) to get this done, let alone my full-time job.  Thank you everyone for considering this request.

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you in June at the golf tournament! Y.I.T.B., Michael Reiff, 1120

Board of Advisors (BOA) President’s Report – Mark Witthar, 853, mwitthar@ford.com

Dear Fraters,

Here we are in March and things continue to go well for the active chapter and the alumni.  The actives are working hard to take care of the property to make it something we can all be proud to call our home away from home. Is it perfect? No. Are we continuing to make progress? Yes! The actives have enacted strict rules regarding the care and upkeep of the house. They are working to change the culture and the alumni needs to support them. Additionally we have 33 signed contracts for the fall semester!  The actives are collecting checks and we are confident we will have a full chapter house this fall and every year going forward. While this may not seem to be a big deal to some of you consider that we have not been completely full for some time. We have certainly been close, but a full 32 makes a HUGE difference financially and to the "psyche" of the chapter.  There are many reasons why we have had trouble filling the house. Mainly it is a problem with non-returning members who have experienced financial hardship. Given the state of the economy we can all appreciate how difficult things have been for many people.

On the alumni side we are up to 163 alumni association members. I am told this is the largest alumni association in the country!  Frater Brad Shelton has done an outstanding job in recruiting members. We have a goal of 250 by the end of the year. With 1500 alumni we should be looking at 500!  If you have not joined please do so today. See Frater Shelton's report for complete details. We are also making improvements in the chapter house. As you know from our last Delta Nu and for those that came to homecoming, we have built a "board room" for the active chapter to hold meetings, study or simply "hang out" in a quiet space that really looks awesome. The kitchen area is next…..

I also want to take the opportunity to thank Kevin Smith, Merle Jones and Mark Rinker for their service on the board. Kevin has been the property manager for the last several years and has done a truly outstanding job in building a culture of accountability through a well written lease contract and smart but forceful enforcement of our rules. Many, many thanks to Kevin for all he has done. Replacing Kevin as the property manager will be Steve Fox and Mike Gallagher. Steve and Mike live in Northwest Missouri and they are already quickly getting things accomplished.

Merle Jones has relinquished his title as Philanthropic Chairman and has taken Mark Rinker's place as our "at large" board member. Merle did a great job in helping to organize the funds we have for scholarships. It is amazing that we have well over $10,000 in available scholarship funds that all came from alumni. This says a great deal about our alumni. David Cox has joined the board to take Merle's place as Philanthropic chairman. Please join me in welcoming David to the team.

Last, and certainly not least, is Mark Rinker. Here’s a quick story that you really must know. Some four years ago while I was relocating to Phoenix from Detroit, Mark contacted me about the active chapter. Simply put, we were in a real financial mess and without quick and decisive action the chapter house would have been lost and most likely the chapter would have folded. Without Mark's involvement we never would have fixed the situation. So we ALL owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Rinker. He is truly a "frater for life."  Well, a little more long-winded than usual but there is a lot going on. If you have not joined the alumni association please do so. If you want to get involved in some small way, please contact us as we would love to hear from you. YITB, Mark Witthar, 853

House Report – Steve Fox, 806, tke806@gmail.com and Mike Gallagher, 815, skkmg@centurytel.net

3/15 update - Please keep Frater Mike Gallagher, 815, and his family in your thoughts and prayers. We just were made aware that his mother passed away on Sunday, March 13th. The visitation is Tuesday, March 15th and funeral is on Wednesday, March 16th.

In January, Fraters Steve Fox, 806, and Mike Gallagher, 815, took over the roles of TKE House Property Manager and will do so for two years. Both Steve and Mike are looking forward serving the Delta Nu Chapter in this capacity and have been impressed with the total commitment that the BOA has towards not only the TKE House but with the total operation of TKE Delta Nu.

Steve and Mike attended the monthly February web meeting at the House, which enabled them to watch the active chapter interact with the BOA. They both felt that this in-person presence during the monthly meetings will keep the lines of communication open between the Active Chapter and the Alumni Board and allow both to stay on task.  Before the February meeting, Steve and Mike toured the House and completed a needs assessment as well as recommendations for future projects. The first major project is to update the fire alarm system.  It was determined that the systems motherboard needed replaced, along several sensors.

So far the current and new House Managers have been working hard to secure housing contracts for next school year. As of March 1st, they have 33 signed contracts and are in the process of getting the deposits completed by April 15th

If you are ever in Maryville, please drop by the House and see TKE Brotherhood in action. The current group of Actives representing TKE Delta Nu is most definitely headed in the right direction. Y.I.T.B, Steve Fox, 806, and Mike Gallagher, 815

Delta Nu Alumni Association – Brad Shelton, 651, brad.shelton@nwtke.com

I am pleased to report that as of March 1st, we have 163 dues paying members in the DNAA and the membership continues to roll in.  In the last 30 days we added more than 17 new alumni to the growing list of dues-paying members!!!

As I follow up with each new member with a membership card and packet, I hear the same question over and over.  “Frater, I love what you guys are doing to support the active chapter and reconnect the alumni but how can I get involved?  I have limited time with the job, family and all but I would like to make a small time contribution.  What can I do from so far from Maryville?”

My response is “Frater, what interests you?”  We are beginning a campaign to contact every Delta Nu Frater to update our email and home address this March and April.  If reconnecting with a few old friends sounds interesting to you give me a call.

As one of the benefits of membership, we plan to offer original art work and paintings, pictures and other memorabilia to the membership. If you have artistic talent, perhaps you could help produce a painting, drawing or other art work commemorating your era or remembrance of Delta Nu.  For instance, we plan to mail to all DNAA members, a pen and ink print of the 222 West Cooper house and plan to offer the Quad and 555 West Cooper in the future.  Perhaps you could offer to host a social event in your city at a your house, a restaurant or local watering hole and invite the Delta Nu Fraters from your area to join you.  If just two guys show up, it counts as a success! It is all about keeping the bond alive and well.

For more information on how you can contribute limited time to support your fellow Fraters, drop me a line or give me a call.  I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Alumni Profile – JD Hammond, 21, by Mark Rinker, 895, mark_rinker@hotmail.com

Dr. J. D. Hammond, 21, was born and raised on a farm a few miles from the small northwest Missouri town of Maitland, where he graduated High School in 1951. He enrolled in NWMSC in the fall of 1951, graduating spring 1955, earning an A.B. degree with a major in Business.

Frater Hammond achieved many distinctions that defined his career, including being the first Prytanis (1954-1955) of Delta Nu Chapter. He has been immersed in leadership and education ever since, first teaching at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Finance, followed by five years with the Ohio State University’s Department of Economics. From there, he accepted a role with Penn State University’s College of Business, where he would stay for the next 34 years.

At Penn State, ‘JD’ advanced to hold the William Elliott Endowed Chair of Insurance, retiring in 1999 as Dean of what had since become the Smeal College of Business. Additionally, he was also President of several Professional Associations, was Chair of several Key Committees at Penn State, served on private sector boards and was a member of the Northwest Foundation Board for six years.

Frater Hammond recalled that after his NWMSC graduation, his brother took him to St. Joseph where with one suitcase and a trunk, he boarded a train to Philadelphia.  After a night in a hotel, and with a little guidance from the offices of the S.S. Huebner foundation at Wharton, he found a single room near campus. After finishing his work at Penn, he headed toward Ohio State where instruction was in both Insurance and Economics. It was at Ohio State where he met and married his wife Marian in 1960, a native of Mansfield, Ohio. Their daughter Nancy lives in Winona, Minnesota and son Michael in Boston.

During Frater Hammond’s undergraduate years in Maryville, Dwight Eisenhower was President and popular music was transitioning from the Big Band era to Rock and Roll. Frater Tex Beneke with The Glenn Miller Orchestra (he played for a dance at Northwest), Buddy Morrow leading the Tommy Dorsey band, and post-war Big Bands of Ralph Flanagan and Ray Anthony were popular. Rock and Roll was hitting it with Bill Haley and the Comets. Popular vocal groups were The Four Lads, Four Freshman, and the Crew Cuts. Andy Griffith had surfaced with his “What it was, was football” description of attending his first football game. Crew cuts were the norm for the young men on campus.

Frater Reid Anderson, President of the TKE Colony during 1953-1954, was described as ‘inspirational’ by Frater Hammond. He went to describe Reid as “a cheerleader - a ‘big guy’ physically, and in his presence on campus.” Frater Hammond had remained unaffiliated with any campus organization for two years, until one of the students invited him to attend a campus Greek function featuring remarks by the then National President of TKE, an attorney from a prominent Kansas City law firm. Hammond recalls that it convinced him to join Delta Nu as a colony. Dr. John Taylor, professor of Social Science, was the Delta Nu faculty advisor at the time.

Influential professors at Northwest were led by Dr. Sterling Surrey in Business, Dr. John Harr in History and Social Science, and Ms. Elaine Mauzey, professor of French. Hammond noted that he thought it was neat that some country kid could learn to speak French – well at least speak some French!

Frater Hammond recalls dozens of other students from his time at Northwest and often wonders how they are, and what they are doing. It was a pleasure for this Teke to meet ‘JD’ via phone and to interview him.  He is a gracious, soft spoken, and engaging Teke – a gentleman at all times.

Jerry Knauss, 345, passes to the Delta Nu Chapter Eternal

Frater Jerry Knauss, scroll 345, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away in his sleep this Saturday, February 26, 2011.  He was 68 years old.

Frater Knauss joined TKE in the Spring Pledge Class of 1964 and remained active in the fraternity well after his graduation from Northwest in 1966.  He was a member of the Delta Nu TKE Alumni Association and was an active alumnus, heavily involved in the new house fundraising campaign and the 50th anniversary and related events in between.  He was the author of the Delta Nu History that is posted under About TKE on the website.  To read our chapter's history, which Jerry worked long and hard to compile, please click on this link: http://www.nwtke.com/content/delta-nu-history/ or go to www.nwtke.com, then About TKE, then Delta Nu History, and then The History of Delta Nu.

His funeral was held Friday, March 4th in Burlington.  Memorials can be sent to the Jerry Knauss family, care of Lunning Funeral Chapel, 2620 Mt. Pleasant St., Burlington, IA 52601. In Delta Nu TKE tradition, when a Delta Nu TKE Frater passes into the TKE chapter eternal, we begin a memorial fund, benefiting the TKE house in that Frater's memory.   This memorial fund, which is funded through donations to the TKE House Capital Improvements fund, will appear on the Dick Wiles "Teke for Life Alumni Donor Wall" once the fund reaches $500. To make a donation to Frater Jerry's memorial fund, click on this link  http://www.nwtke.com/content/donation-opportunities/ and scroll down to the Capital Improvements fund. In addition, donations can be made in Frater Jerry's name to any of the funds Delta Nu has listed on the Delta Nu website.

The Delta Nu Alumni Association sent a traditional TKE floral arrangement of Red Carnations to the funeral.  A few Fraters attended the funeral services. Frater Knauss' obituary is on the funeral home website, http://www.lunningfuneralchapel.com/obituary/23191/Mr-Jerry-JR-Knauss/ and will be added later to the Delta Nu Chapter Eternal section (under the Alumni tab).

The committee for the Peter J. Greve Memorial TKE Alumni Scholarship is pleased to announce that Oak Park High School senior Jessica Dorrel is this year’s recipient. Ms. Dorrel was nominated for the $1,000 scholarship by her uncle, Delta Nu alumnus Tony Dorrel, 920. The award is good for the 2011-2012 term.

TKE House Capital Improvements – Steve Moss, 927, semoss@mchsi.com

“Developing, Implementing & Seeing Through Enhancements to the TKE House”

The Capital Improvements Committee is off and running for 2011!  We have several projects underway, including house improvement projects and the Annual Giving Program for the house. Through this program, we’re working towards a $15,000 fundraising goal for 2011.

This year, we hope to complete the following house improvement projects:

  • Fraters TV Lounge: Renovation of the common area on 2ndfloor into a TV area for the active chapter to gather on a regular basis.  This will allow them to be together for big sports events, movies, etc.
  • Outside Storage Area:We plan to build a small storage shed during this summer’s work day on July 16 & 17. There we can for store maintenance items, mowers etc.  This will allow the patio area to be used as it was intended and avoid the clutter that accumulates there now.
  • Trophy Case Restoration: We have commitments from alumni Phil Burmeister, 315, and Steve Eckard, 536, to assist with restoration of the trophy case from 222 West Cooper.  Our hope is to install this in the house the start of the Fall 2011 semester.  We still need additional alumni who are familiar with wood restoration to assist with this project.  Please reach out to Committee Chairman Steve Moss at semoss@mchsi.com or at: (573) 489-5029.

Hopefully you’ll agree that these much needed projects are worthy of your support through our Annual Giving Program.  Our hope is that all Delta Nu Tekes will support this vital part of the fraternity annually with a small (or largeJ) contribution.

As you know, the house is a major factor in what has made Delta Nu Chapter and our Alumni Association so great for so many years.  With the positive progress that the BOA has made, we’re making great strides with our 11-year-old house.  Please take time today and support this great cause.

Cumulative contributions to The TKE House Capital Improvement Fund are recognized at: $250, $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 on The Richard W. Wiles Teke for Life Donor wall at the house.  With a little help each year, your name will be on the wall and move up with more long-term support.

Contributions for The TKE House Capital Improvement Fund can be sent to Chris Holder (BOA Treasurer), 12480 South Greenwood, Olathe, KS, 66062. Please make your check payable to: Delta Nu Alumni Association and write “Capital Improvements” on the memo line.

Additionally, contributions can be made through the Delta Nu website at: http://www.nwtke.com/content/donation-opportunities. Please scroll to the bottom of the page to the TKE House Capital Improvements Donation section.

Thank you for supporting the TKE House through the Capital Improvements Fund! The Capital Improvements Committee - Steve Moss,927, Doug Johnson, 295, Steve Brightwell, 775, and Joe Saubers, 930

Philanthropy, Special Projects Education Fund – Scott Keilbey, 666, skeilbey@tnemec.com

Through the Special Projects fund, we were able to assist four active Fraters in attending the February Regional Leadership Conference (RCL) in Kansas City.  The cost of this was $600.

The Special Projects fund, set up through the TKE Educational Foundation (TEF), helps chapters with educational and leadership opportunities for its active members.  Fraters donating to TKE can designate their donation to help fund Delta Nu’s Special Projects Fund. TKE National’s website is www.tke.org. The current fund balance is just over $2,000.  Our goal for this year is to at least replenish the funds used for RLC and for any other opportunities we might fund. Y.I.T.B., Scott Keilbey, 666

Social Committee – Ron Beaver, 858, rb64089@gmail.com

Kansas City / Des Moines Bowling Events a success

January 30th marked a historic day for the Delta Nu Alumni Association with not one bowling tournament, but two concurrent bowling tournaments in Kansas City and Des Moines!  Over 30 Fraters total participated in the two events.

The winning 3-game effort belongs to the Kansas City team of Bernie Batliner (847), Mike Gallagher (815), Kevin Smith (932), Scott Ooton (810) and Ken Yeager (826).  Not only do these men have bragging rights for the next 12 months, they also have possession of the coveted traveling trophy award…it’s not the Stanley Cup, but close!  If you have an idea for a name for the trophy, please contact me at rb64089@gmail.com.

Our alumni social efforts are reaching beyond Maryville and Kansas City so let’s keep the momentum rolling.  Many thanks to Frater Jerrad Popp (1144) for organizing one of the first alumni events in Des Moines and thanks to Max Knudsen (779) for running the Kansas City event.  Next year, we’d love to get bowling events in Denver, Omaha and Chicago as well. Please let me know if you’d like to coordinate one of these events or some other gathering.

Visit nwtke.com and the TKE Delta Nu group on Facebook for news on other upcoming events.  Make this your year to participate in at least one TKE alumni event to reconnect with old friends and Fraters.  And should you desire to organize an event near you or simply help on a social committee please let me know. Y.I.T.B., Ron Beaver, 858

Golf Tournament – Brent Steffens, 1384, mrbrentsteffens@yahoo.com

16th Annual Delta Nu Memorial Scramble Golf Tournament to be held June 3rd

Grab your smart phone, open your Outlook calendar, or grab a pencil and your planner... and mark June 3rd for your annual trip to Maryville, MO for the 16th annual TKE Delta Nu Memorial Scramble - June 3, 2011 - at the always sunny, and usually windy, Mozingo Lake Golf Course in Maryville.

This year's format will again be a four-man scramble, and is open to all actives and alumni of Delta Nu, as well as Tekes from other chapters. Last year's event was the largest ever with 94 golfers... so get your registration in early! Register a team of four, a trio, a dynamic duo, or as a solo swinger.

A few additions have been made to the tournament this year, so be sure to read subsequent emails with a careful eye.  Opportunities for online registration and payment, cost savings, additional prizes, and hole sponsorships will be communicated as we move further into the spring time.

In a continued effort to grow membership and bring value to the Delta Nu Alumni Association (DNAA) membership, a special golf bonus package will be available to all current and new DNAA members. In addition to the standard golf package, all members of DNAA will receive a special golf rate, a complimentary personal mulligan, 2 complimentary drink tickets, and entry into a DNAA member raffle. Total DNAA member bonus is $25.  Learn more about DNAA membership at http://www.nwtke.com/content/alumni-association

Registration Deadline is Friday, May 20th... but spots are limited, so don't delay. All registrations and fees need to be submitted and paid by this date. Online Registration will open in the following weeks. Stay tuned!

Delta Nu Website Redesign

The Delta Nu website will soon be getting an extreme makeover! Spearheaded by Fraters Ryan Jackson, 1547 and Nathan Welch, 1386, you should see the improved look and feel and easier-to-use site in time for the June 3rd Delta Nu Memorial Scramble. Once available, we will announce to everyone about the changes and any new instructions for accessing “private” content or content available to Delta Nu Alumni Association members.

March Did You Know? Dennis Cox, 659, dennisc@northwestmissouri.com

Did you know that 470 TKE chapters have been chartered since the fraternity’s founding and of those, 274 chapters and colonies remain active. The average chapter size is 40.5 members. Of US states, New York sports the most chapters and colonies with 25. California and Pennsylvania are tied for second with 13, then New Jersey with 11 and Texas with 9. Missouri makes the top 10 with 8 chapters.

Did you know the cost break down for being a Delta Nu Teke isn’t as simple or “inexpensive” as it used to be. In 2010-2011, the active membership fee for Delta Nu Chapter was $220 per semester or $416 per year if paid up front. Parlor fees were $150 for those actives not living in the house. The single member cost to live in the house was $1,600 per semester or $2,950 per school year if paid up front. As per TKE National, the one-time candidate fee to become active is $125 per member (due within 14 days of bid acceptance) and the one-time initiation fee is $285 per man (due the semester after pledgeship). Delta Nu is also responsible for remitting to National an annual membership fee of $115 per man for the year or $70 per man, per semester.
