Board of Advisors Update
President’s Report – Mark Witthar, mwitthar@ford.com
The Board of Advisors has been busy working on a number of issues including communications, philanthropy and social events. I can tell you that the health of the active chapter is also very good with a full house this fall and improvements being made on the house this summer. For those of you that come to the golf event you will get to witness some of the house improvements firsthand. I would like to ask that if you have not joined the Delta Nu Alumni Association, please do so. We are asking for $50 per year or $105 for three years. This money will be spent to help re-connect alumni - it will not go to pay for house rent, utilities, etc. The active chapter is responsible for those ongoing expenses and we will not be using this money for that purpose.
In this newsletter you will be able to read about all the good things that are going on with Delta Nu. This is happening because alumni are getting involved. Our goal is simple . . . . we want to help alumni re-connect with old friends. So get involved and get re-connected.
Treasurer’s Report – Chris Holder, chris67_99@yahoo.com
The current alumni fund balances are:
Alumni Association: $6,163.78
Capital Improvements Fund: $8,992.14
Dick Wiles Special Fund: $350.00
Savings/Emergency: $4,233.58
Total All Funds: $19,739.50
House Report – Kevin Smith, kevins@npgco.com
No different from our own homes, summer at the TKE House is time for larger maintenance and improvement projects. Included on this summer’s schedule for house maintenance are installing a new entry door, re carpeting the main stairs, replacing damaged ceiling tiles, painting the chapter room and repairing balcony flooring. Active chapter members and hired contractors will complete the work.
These repair projects are not flashy, but are necessary to make the house attractive to current and future residents. Steve Moss, as head of the Capital Improvement committee will also be leading some summer work efforts. His efforts however, will improve the sizzle of the house space. Please see his report later on for details
Frater Profile – Chuck Riley, 351
CURRENT ADDRESS: 5N875 Mill Stone Dr St Charles, IL 60175
PREVIOUS PLACES LIVED: Helena, Montana; Zion, Illinois; Buffalo, NY; Bettendorf, Iowa; Independence, Missouri; Des Moines, Iowa
BIRTHDATE: February 3, 1940, Des Moines, IA
YEAR PLEDGED: Spring, 1964 YEAR GRADUATED: 1966
ADDITONAL EDUCATION: No additional degrees. In 31 years of law enforcement with the US Food and Drug Administration, there was necessary training in personnel management and investigative procedures which was provided by the government.
CURRENT OCCUPATION: Retired but still willing
CAREER SUMMARY: Starting in 1966, I traveled as an FDA investigator based in Kansas City, Missouri, Davenport, Iowa, Buffalo, NY, Great Lakes (Illinois) Naval Training Center, and Helena, Montana. In 1977, I became a supervisory investigator in Chicago, IL, and in 1987 a legal / compliance officer in Chicago, IL. In 1997, I retired from the FDA to work for a pharmaceutical manufacturer, and then consulted for six years for another drug maker. I taught school one year, and have coached high school soccer and rugby for the past ten years. We are now exploring a possible Peace Corps assignment – we welcome whatever adventure is still possible.
FAMILY BIOGRAPHY: On June 22, 1962, I married Dixie, who has been the best possible partner, mother and grandmother. She is now a retired accountant who loves quilting and travel. We have two daughters and two sons, all with degrees plus three advanced degrees. They provided us with 11 grandchildren who range from age 3 to 23.
SPECIAL INTERESTS: We live in a soccer hotbed, and our kids and grandkids played, while the elders coached and refereed. I took up Rugby in my 30s, as a founding member of the Helena Rugby Club, and founder of Elgin (Ill) Rugby club. We love travel, and have visited Europe many times with soccer and rugby tours. I celebrate milestone years, such as 55, 60, 65, by playing a not-so-serious Rugby match with my local club. Dixie was a gifted distance runner, and so we ran road races for many years, until arthritis sidelined her. Besides sports we have worked for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts many years. We remain hopeful for the future of America’s children.
HONORS OR RECOGNITION: 11 wonderful kids call me “Grandpa.”
Active Chapter Update - Kenneth Hamilton, 1436, Prytanis, s255507@nwmissouri.edu
Recently the executive board and I completed the annual report and submitted our entrees for the Top TKE awards. The Top TKE Awards are awarded on six standards based upon recruitment results, chapter size, community service, alumni relations, academic success and extracurricular activities. Of these standards four of the six must be met in order to qualify as a Top TKE Chapter.
Delta Nu met five of these standards.
· We have been one of the top five recruiting TKE chapters in the nation since 2004 and finished third overall with 33 candidates this year (number 2 on campus).
· Our chapter size is 72 and is the largest on campus!
· Delta Nu completed 4992 community service hours including both campus based philanthropies and community based.
· As the majority of you are aware our alumni chapter is one of the largest and most involved at Northwest and has set a standard for involvement that few can meet.
· Our chapter GPA increased from last year and was a 2.78. The Spring 2010 grades are yet to be received but expectations are high!
· Nearly every member in the chapter is involved in another club or organization and ten of our members are executive board members in those clubs!
Delta Nu has high hopes of receiving a Top TKE Award and we are waiting anxiously for the results.
In other news, Frater Brooks Swanson recently received a position with headquarters and Frater Michael Russell was promoted to Region 4 advisor. Congratulations gentlemen!
Classes start again in August with formal recruitment beginning in September. And everyone in the Delta Nu community is looking forward to another strong year in Tau Kappa Epsilon.
Congratulations to these May 2010 Graduates: Vince Tobin, 1486, Brooks Swanson, 1494, Danny Schill, 1492, Brandon Butcher, 1531, Richard Jobe, 1472, James Berry, 1441
Alumni Association – Brad Shelton, brad.shelton@nwtke.com
Recently, I received a copy of an email thanking Mark Witthar, BOA Chairman, for his Happy Anniversary letter send out to celebrate 56 years of Delta Nu at NWMSU on Saturday, May 15. The letter thanked Frater Mark for the kind words and expressed great delight in receiving a communication from an organization that was not requesting financial support. The writer went on to say that the Frater was going to call a brother or two and reminiscing about their days at TKE and NWMSU.
This is the very nature of what the Delta Nu Alumni Association is all about. Keeping the connections alive and bringing back to life those positive connections from the past. We are indeed blessed with a very strong active chapter lead by an excellent group of young fraters keeping the positive traditions of Delta Nu TKE alive and well. We have a solid house with a very affordable rent program that pays for all of the bills and provides a great place for all Delta Nu Fraters to gather. (See the Golf Report)
The Delta Nu Alumni Association is dedicated to keeping these past memories and connections alive and well and living in the present. We currently have 67 Fraters committed to paying annual dues of $50 to support the development of the Delta NU Frater Locator and the NWTKE.com web site. (See the Web Site Report) We are offering several opportunities for Fraters to reconnect at many social functions in various cities by and for the alumni of Delta Nu.(See the social Report)
To help us continue the good work we have begun, I ask each of you to consider joining the Alumni Association and pledging the modest sum of $50 annually to support this good work. More information on how you can join can be found at http://www.nwtke.com/content/join-delta-nu-alumni-association

TKE House Capital Improvement Update – Steve Moss, 927, semoss@mchsi.com
It’s hard to believe, but the “New TKE House” has just completed its 11th school year providing a home for our undergraduate Delta Nu Fraters and as well as a home for all Delta Nu Tekes when they return to Maryville. Not unlike our own homes, as they get older, they require enhancements to improve the value and usability for changing needs.
To address these needs, a group of alumni have formed the “Capital Improvements Committee” to oversee necessary TKE house enhancement projects and the fundraising to support them. Along with recent progress and some re-structuring with the Alumni Board of Advisors, the Capital Improvement Committee is proud to unveil recently established the “TKE House Capital Improvements Fund.” The committee is chaired by Frater Steve Moss, 927. Committee members include Fraters: Doug Johnson, 296, Steve Brightwell, 775, Joe Saubers 930 and Brent Steffens, 1384
The Capital Improvement Committee will formally kick off their efforts at the upcoming TKE Golf Tournament, June 4th in Maryville. They will provide an update on current house improvement projects, the list of possible future projects, and an update for those in attendance on how they can help support this fund specifically dedicated to enhancement projects at the Delta Nu TKE House.
Alumni Fraters are encouraged to support the TKE House Capital Improvement Fund at the upcoming golf tournament or by sending contributions to the following address:
Chris Holder; C/O TKE House Capital Improvements Fund
12480 South Greenwood; Olathe, KS 66062
Contributions to the TKE House Capital Improvement Fund will be recorded for each individual contributor and recognized on “The Richard W. Wiles Teke for Life” donor wall at the TKE house. This fund, specifically for the TKE House, started in in 1996 to make the “New TKE House” a reality. Cumulative contributions to the house since 1996 are recognized on the wall at the following levels: $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000+. Please consider making a first -time contribution or adding to your previous contribution and help TKE and the BOA enhance the TKE House after 11 great years at our new address.
