May 2011 DN e-Review

Fraters,

Isn’t it amazing that it’s nearly summer. For those of you living in the southeast and the Mississippi/Ohio river valleys, we all wish you the best and send our thoughts and prayers to you, your family and friends as you may be dealing with the worst spring has to offer with the tornadoes and flooding.

I am very excited to soon be entering a new chapter of my Delta Nu Alumni life as this will be first year in 16 that I will not be worried about running the golf tournament.  Likewise, this will be the first Delta Nu Review in two years that I will not have solely been responsible for editing and compiling. My thanks to Brent Steffens and Hawkeye Wilson for graciously taking these duties from me. Please help them with these endeavors as much as you’ve helped me over the years.

I hope you have a great summer and I hope to see you at the golf tournament in a few short weeks on June 3rd. If you haven’t registered today, please go to www.nwtke.com/golfregistration2011.

Board of Advisors (BOA) President’s Report – Mark Witthar, 853, mwitthar@ford.com

Fraters,

I want to take this opportunity to wish all of you a happy Founder's Day for our chapter. On May 15, 1954 the Delta Nu Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon was formed. Since that time, we have initiated over 1,600 men into our bond. In a short time, just 57 years, we have initiated more than 30 men per year!  That is an incredible statistic and it shows how well we have performed in recruiting.  We have one of the largest alumni associations in the country with almost 200 dues paying members.  This means that we all have a strong bond and we care about the chapter and keeping the ideals alive.  Are things perfect? Absolutely not. Are we doing better? Absolutely yes!  Simply put, it is because of your involvement and I want to thank all of you for what you have done to make Delta Nu such a great place to call home.  Please take a moment to reflect on the great time you had at Northwest and pick up the phone, write a letter or send an e-mail to an old friend. They would love to hear from you.  If you have not taken the time lately, please go to www.nwtke.comand see what is going on with the chapter and the alumni. You will be glad you did.

I also want to give you a quick update on the chapter and the Board of Advisors. The chapter has done a great job filling the house for the fall. We have 34 signed contracts with deposits!  The house capacity is 32 men, but we find that every year we have some fallout so this gives us a cushion. It also means that if everyone does in fact live in the house than we truly will have an adventure in group living!  To that end, we will also be making improvements over the summer by painting rooms, replacing carpet and other projects to be determined by the Board. Speaking of the Board --we have some new members!

DavidCox has taken over Merle Jones role as our Philanthropy director. Merle will still maintain an "at large" position on the Board.  We are excited about the many different programs we are working on in this area and you can read more about it later in our report.

As you probably already know, Mike Gallagher and Steve Fox have agreed to take over the Property Management duties that were previously handled by Kevin Smith. We also have Fraters Carson Reidel (Northern Colorado TKE alum and Maryville resident) as well as Frater Rod Auxier assisting with contracts and other duties related to the property.

Mike Reiffand his wife are expecting their third child - congratulations! As a result, he has handed over his duties as Newsletter editor to Hawkeye Wilson, 1186. Please join me in thanking Mike for his great work on the newsletter.

The bottom line is this....We are asking people to take on smaller, more focused projects which only requires a small amount of time. If you have a desire to assist in some small way please let us know. We would love to have your involvement. Much of the work can be completed via email and phone so where you live is not a limiting factor.

Happy Founder's Day to everyone!

House Report – Steve Fox, 806, tke806@gmail.com and Mike Gallagher, 815, skkmg@centurytel.net

Fraters Steve Fox (806) and Mike Gallagher (815) have been working with the Active Chapter with their efforts in securing room contracts for the 2011-2012 academic year. We both attended a Chapter meeting and spoke to the Actives about having pride and building a bond throughout the Chapter. There are 34 signed contracts for next year. We want to thank Joe Sanders, the House Manager for next year, for his efforts in securing the contracts and deposits. The current semester is ending with only a small amount of past rent owed still on the books.  Frater Sanders is working with the two Actives that still owe money so that all past amounts will be paid.

The Housing Committee has been busy planning for the summer projects. If all goes as planned, all hallways and the new Frater Room are scheduled to have new flooring laid.  We are also looking at fixing several problems that have come up over this past semester, including bracing up the stairwell that is used to go to the second floor.

Please mark your calendar for the work weekend that is scheduled for Friday July 15th and Saturday July 16th. There a lot of projects being planned and we can use as many hands as possible. Please contact either of us if you want to help out.

For more information on the Property Committee contact Steve Fox, 806, tke806@gmail.comor Mike Gallagher, 815, skkmg@centurytel.net

Active Chapter President’s Report – Gunner Sumy, 1564, gunnersumy@hotmail.com

The active members of the TKE Delta Nu chapter have continued to improve upon the long line of success that has been paved by our prior fraters. This past semester we have completed over 7,000 philanthropy hours through various events. This is one of the highest amounts of community service in the TKE Nation!  These events include Mustache March, Greek Night Live, and Camping for Cans totaling more than $2,000 being donated.

We also completed a large cleanup of the house and worked on the exteriors aesthetics on the annual Chapter work weekend. We planted flowers along the front yard and around the flag pole. Additionally, we put new mulch in the areas.

In Greek Week this semester, we placed third both in the chariot race and in Rec Night. At the Greek Awards we heard news that two members of the chapter, Rick Swaney and myself, were admitted to the Northwest Order of Omega, the Greek honorary society.

This is a ceremonial time of year for the chapter with the induction of new members and the graduation of others. We finished with the induction of three candidates for the Spring Semester and have six individuals graduating that will be dearly missed. The initiates were Byron Walker from Kansas City, MO and Carlton Wilcoxson from St. Louis, MO. Our graduates were Austin Martens and Michael Hulgan from Kansas City, MO; Ray Orf from Perry, MO; Brandon Meeseburg from Gallatin,MO; and Todd Sexton from Des Moines, IA.

There are several of us that look forward to participating in the annual golf tournament this summer and can not wait for the interaction with fellow fraters. This summer, we are offering an incoming freshman scholarship to potential new members and plan some summer rush activities that we are hopeful will produce a large new member class in the fall. We would be thankful for any leads on perspective new members for the fall.  We appreciate the efforts of the BOA and the support of the DNAA over the last year.

We also have TKE Conclave coming up in early August, in which we will be taking at least four members of the chapter. Our Delta Nu executive board will have its semiannual retreat later on in the month of August.

The active chapter has completed the restoration of the composites in the house and all from Fall 1994 to Spring 2008, and 2009-2010 have been reframed, mounted and permanently hung back on the walls in the TKE house. There are four other composites that Frater Steve Eckert had refurbished which will soon grace the walls of the house. (Fall 1990 – Spring 1994). There are four additional composites we’ve received 11 x 17s for which we are exploring reproduction options. (Fall 1979 – Spring 1983)

For more information on the active chapter contact Gunner Sumy 1564, gunnersumy@hotmail.com

Delta Nu Alumni Association – Brad Shelton, 651, brad.shelton@nwtke.com

I am pleased to report that as of May 1st we have 170 dues paying members in the DNAA and the membership continues to roll in.  In the last 30 days, we added more than 5 new alumni to the growing list of dues-paying members and we have our FIRST Lifetime membership for $1,000!!!

In the next few months, we will be moving the Frater Database to a centralized, secured, on-line database where we will be able to focus more time and energy into the updating of the database and tracking down lost Fraters.

Last month, I suggested that individuals could offer to host a social event in their city at a their house, a restaurant or local watering hole and invite the Delta Nu Fraters from their area to join them.  I suggested that if just two guys show up, it counts as a success! It is all about keeping the bond alive and well.

Well, this summer we will be offering several social gatherings like the Memorial Golf Scramble or the gathering at O’Dowd’s on July 16th at 6:30 in North Kansas City.  Look for details under the social committee report.

Here are the new members since March:

729 - Shawn Francis - 2Yr

861 - Michael Christensen - 3Yr

868 - Scott Meier - Lifetime

1001 - Thomas Leeper - 1Yr

1462 - Joe Masciovecchio - 1Yr

Passing of Frater Bob Cotter, 212

Robert “Bob” H. Cotter, 68, St. Joseph, Mo., passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2011 surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Bob pledged TKE in Spring of 1961 and graduated in 1965. He was Prytanis in 1963, was chapter advisor from 1974 to 1978. He also had served as director of the Northwest Alumni Association. Bob was the owner and operator of Cotter Travel in Maryville and St. Joseph.  Services were held on Saturday, April 30th at Wyatt Park Baptist Church in St. Joseph. A number of Fraters attended and The Delta Nu Alumni Association sent a memorial floral arrangement and his memory will be honored at the June 3rd Delta Nu Memorial Scramble. Here is the obituary from the Maryville Daily Forum.

Robert “Bob” H. Cotter, 68, St. Joseph, Mo., passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2011 surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Bob was born Aug. 20, 1942 in Los Angeles, California to Cy and Lucille (Wall) Cotter. He graduated with a Master’s Degree from Northwest Missouri State University, while there he was President of the TKE fraternity.

Bob served his country in both the Army and Navy Reserves and was a member of Wyatt Park Baptist Church. Bob owned and operated Cotter Travel, since 1985.  He belonged to the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce and the East Side Rotary Club, where he received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award.

Bob loved music and had a passion for sports, especially basketball.  He was a strong supporter of both Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State universities.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Mary (Stevens) Cotter, St. Joseph; son, Chad Cotter and wife Debbie, St. Joseph; daughter, Erin Bushey and husband David, La Mesa, Calif.; son, Kevin Anderson and wife Chris, Liberty, Mo.; daughter, Kelly Anderson, Kansas City, Mo.; son, Kent Anderson and wife Lorenna, St. Joseph; grandchildren: Keatley and Jenna Cotter, Aubrey, Taylor and Keegan Bushey, Zac Anderson, Taylor and Travis Poretta, Mateo and Lucas Anderson; and great-grandson, Nicholas Chadwick.

Alumni Profile – Reid Anderson, 8; Submitted by:  Frater Philip Burmeister

Reid Anderson is a Charter member of Delta Nu, attending from 1951 to 1955.  He was the first President of the TKE colony at NWMSC, before our official Charter was granted.  He attended on the G.I. Bill after serving the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1951.   After three years of education, Reid taught for a year at Leon (Iowa) High School.   After graduating in 1955, he then taught two years in the Kansas City school system.

From there, he was assigned a very interesting teaching position in Fontainebleau, France, as a ninth grade World Geography teacher in a Military Dependents School.   He adds that it was interesting because the students had been all over the world as their parents were Majors, Colonels, and Generals.   The students he suggested, "...often knew more world geography than the teacher!"  The school was just south of Paris and on occasion he would travel into the city.  On one such occasion, he saw General Eisenhower and his son John, who had come to visit his father at Military Headquarters!

After his service in France, he returned to his home in Kansas City, teaching 8th and 9th grade students in Common Learning and English.  To finish his career at Kansas City, he became a School Social Worker or "truant officer", as he indicates was the real nature of the job.   He helped students that had problems attending school and worked out problems with teachers, principals, and parents.

Reid married Carolyn Criswell and they had one daughter Jenny Ellen, also of Kansas City.   The Andersons now winter in Porto Virda, Mexico.

Frater Anderson sites that "His TKE experiences gave him the support needed to ensure the confidence a young man needed to teach and to be a successful administrator – where every day was unique and different from the past day."

TKE Scholarship for Delta Nu Active Members, Dave Teeter, 901, dteeter@mc-wildcats.org

I am happy to announce that the TKE Actives Scholarship fund received a sizable donation from Frater Scott Meier, 868, a 1984 graduate, which will help continue to fund the scholarship that was given this past Spring for the first time in many years. We hope through generous donations such as these from alumni, friends or families of Tau Kappa Epsilon we can continue to have this scholarship program for many years in the future. Please consider making a donation to this fund on the www.nwtke.com website. This scholarship group is always seeking any and all assistance from people that are willing to contribute to a great cause, the education of our future!

The next scholarship due date for the 2012-13 academic year will be February 1, 2012 for all actives that meet the criteria set forth in the application. Please encourage any and all actives next year to apply for this excellent opportunity to help defray the expenses of their education.

Peter J. Greve Memorial TKE Alumni Scholarship, Bruce Barlow, 533, tkedn533@comcast.net

When Pete Greve informed us of his terminal illness, he asked that no one feel sorry for him, rather “let’s do something to continue the brotherhood, the bond that brought us all together.”  Now the scholarship he initiated appropriately bears and honors his name;

Peter J. Greve Memorial TKE Alumni of Northwest Missouri State University Scholarship.

Pete’s vision was to assist high school seniors to experience college life and get a great education at the same University that gave all of us our start.  This was and remains to be a totally Delta-Nu TKE effort; funded by Delta-Nu, managed by Delta-Nu and most of all, the high school senior must be nominated by a Delta-Nu TKE.

Having just announced our fourth recipient gives cause to reflect back on Pete’s vision.

2011 recipient:  Jessica Dorrel                     Niece of Tony Dorrel, 920

2010 recipient:  Edward Oster, Jr                 Son of Edward Oster, 986

2009 recipient:  Kelly Critten                        Nominated by Dennis Cox, 659

2008 recipient: Lauren McCulley                 Niece of Dennis Cox, 659

All of these recipients were outstanding high school students and community leaders, and will undoubtedly go on to great success in their future endeavors.  Each was nominated by a Delta-Nu TKE.  Each has or will receive a $1,000 scholarship upon beginning their freshman year at NWMSU. Pete would have been proud & Delta Nu should be proud!!

TKE House Capital Improvements – Steve Moss, 927, semoss@mchsi.com

As spring arrives and the undergraduates go on their way for the summer, we are gearing up to complete some of the house improvement projects that we mentioned in the last e-review.  They include some finishing touches to the Board Room that was renovated in the fall semester.  We’re also moving forward with the first phase of the “Fraters Lounge” on the second floor.  This project will begin in July during the TKE House Work Weekend set for July 15 & 16.  If you are skilled at home repairs, or have tools to loan that would assist with this annual event, please contact TKE House Summer Work Day Chairmen Ed Hansen, DN 619, ed.hansen@o-mschools.org , Brian Lohafer, DN 564, blohafer@usd458.orgor Craig Poldberg, DN 761, cpoldberg@msn.com.

On the financial side of the TKE House Capital Improvement Committee, we are moving in the right direction but need your help to reach our goal of $15,000 for TKE house improvements this year.  To date, we have had three contributions to The TKE House Capital Improvement Fund.

A big Thank You goes to Frater Keith Jorgensen, 438, for his recent $1,000 contribution.  We will have his nameplate upgraded and updated at the TKE Memorial Golf Tournament in early June.

We need your help.  Please take a moment to drop a check in the mail or contribute on line at www.nwtke.com. Your cumulative contributions over time will get your name on the Teke for Life alumni donor wall at the house or move you up if you have contributed in the past.

The TKE House Capital Improvement Fund

Please make checks to: TKE Board of Advisors and send them to: TKE House Capital Improvements Committee, C/O Chris Holder-BOA Treasurer, 12480 South Greenwood, Olathe, KS  66062

Please help us reach our annual $15,000 goal in 2011!  As Tekes, you all remember: “Many men as One Man.” If everyone contributes annually $50 or $100 we can really make some great additions to our house.

Web Redesign and Updates, Michael Reiff, 1120, mwreiff@charter.net

The redesign of the Delta Nu website continues onward as Nathan Welch continues making the site easier to navigate and use.  The goal and plan is still to have the new site up and running this June.  If you have not checked out the site in a while, please take a little bit of time to do so, and remember to get yourself a login to the site as we will soon be making some more pages and features secured from the general public.

In addition to the site redesign, many of the pages have been updated.  If you haven’t been there in a while, here are the areas that have had updates:

  • The donations page has been cleaned up and there are now individual pages for our scholarships and funds
  • The lists for Lost Fraters, Chapter Eternal, Alumni Association members, Board of Advisors
  • Added the TKE “Welcome” Scholarship for potential new members to the Join TKE page
  • Tons of old Delta Nu Reviews have been scanned and posted to the site. Visit News & Info and The Delta Nu Review or http://www.nwtke.com/content/delta-nu-review(Please note, you need a PDF reader to be able to view them; for a free reader, visit www.adobe.com)
  • Added the Marketplace to the Alumni page

Delta Nu Marketplace

Speaking of the Marketplace, this is a new feature for the website. Located in the Alumni section of the website, the Marketplace will be your page for “yellow pages” listings of Frater-owned businesses, a place to buy TKE shirts, rah rahs, old golf tournament items, etc., as well as job postings.

Our hope is that if you are looking for someone to fulfill a particular service or if you’re looking for a particular product, that you would check out the Marketplace first.

Currently, the only thing on the Marketplace page is the business listings with a couple of example, but we hope to expand services later. Posting on the page is currently reserved for Delta Nu Alumni Association members in good standing, but all Fraters can view the listings.

For more information on the Martketplace or Web site, contact Michael Reiff, 1120, mwreiff@charter.net

CompositeRestoration Project, Bobbie D Nielsen, 640, nielsenbd1@yahoo.com

The active chapter has completed the restoration of the composites in the house and all from Fall 1994 to Spring 2008, and 2009-2010 have been reframed, mounted and permanently hung back on the walls in the TKE house. There are four other composites that Frater Steve Eckert had refurbished which will soon grace the walls of the house. (Fall 1990 – Spring 1994). There are four additional composites we’ve received 11 x 17s for which we are exploring reproduction options. (Fall 1979 – Spring 1983)

We’ve been researching costs from different vendors to restore many past composites to their former glory. It’s been a long and hard process since the same vendor has not been used over all of our years and some vendors are no longer in business. There are copyright laws to consider for some pieces to get them restored.

The plan at this point is to hang some composites during Work Weekend in mid-July. As I know that most of you in the area will be planning to attend the work weekend, I ask that you let me know well in advance what composite year(s) and size(s) of composites, if unframed, that you will be bringing with you as well as framed ones.  As I live in Johnson County, KS, if you have composites that need to go to the house, let me know and I would be happy to meet you.

For questions on the composite restoration project, contact Bobbie D Nielsen, 640, nielsenbd1@yahoo.com

TKE “Did You Know” – Dennis Cox, 659, dennisc@northwestmissouri.com

Did you know….that through the fall pledge class of 2010 there were 15 Fraters with the surname “Johnson” in Delta Nu Chapter.  Following close behind with 14 are Brown/Browne. Other popular surnames associated with Delta Nu over the years are Anderson/Andersen (9), Smith (8), Miller (8), Jones (7) and Thompson/Thomson (7). Also popular on the rolls are Wilson, Williams, Taylor, White, Baker, Walker and Jackson. We are making an effort to identify legacy connections.  If you are a legacy, (brother, father, uncle, etc., that had joined Delta Nu, drop us an email and let us know that connection.
