BOARD OF ADVISORS UPDATE
President’s Message – Mark Witthar, 853, mwitthar@ford.com
The Delta Nu Board of Advisors (BOA) and the active chapter are continuing our work to help Delta Nu become the best chapter possible. Our next big event is Homecoming at Northwest on October 30. Many fraters from around the United States will converge on Maryville to rekindle old friendships. Frater Tad Trecker (#739) has done an outstanding job of developing before and after game "tailgate parties" at the TKE house. If you don't have plans to attend, you should make plans now!
The active chapter has 26 new men that will help build an even stronger chapter. Working with their counterparts on the BOA the officers of the active chapter are developing and executing plans throughout the year. Each active chapter officer corresponds directly with a counterpart on the BOA to develop ideas, share concerns and implement solutions.
We are financially solvent, we are responsible and we are having a damn good time!
Come join the fun!

Fundraising and Philanthropy:
The chapter has voted to do several community service projects around the local Maryville community. These projects include but are not limited to: Power Washing several university buildings, repainting a porch for a local Maryville Citizen, walking the creek that runs behind the TKE house starting on 4th street and going South to clean up any trash. More information will be provided about these community service projects as they take place.
The chapter is now making an effort to collect and recycle cans in order to raise additional funds for various projects or philanthropies. The money from the recycled cans currently does not have a designated destination at this time.
Here are a couple of the events we have hosted or participated in to date this semester:
RockOut at the TKE House - On Saturday, October 2nd, 2010 we held the 5th annual rock out concert at the TKE House. This year all proceeds were donated to St. Jude’s, our national philanthropy while in previous years it had been donated to Alzheimer research. This year $1,100 was raised through sale of concert tickets and t-shirts. The bands in attendance were: Answer Me Dancer from Independence, Mo; One Headlight High from Westboro, Mo; and Inlike from Kansas City, Mo.
B.R.U.S.H. - Five actives were in attendance for the B.R.U.S.H. event in Maryville on Sunday, September 26th, where Greeks helped clean up various parts and areas of Maryville from nature trails to various houses in poor condition.
The Jennifer Suhr Walk for Asthma – The Jennifer Suhr Walk for Asthma, held on Saturday, September 25th, was a success with twenty guys from our active chapter in attendance and over $5,500 raised in total from the event. Jennifer Suhr is the late wife of TKE Delta Nu Frater Troy Suhr, SCROLL.
House: The railing around the chapter room is now full repaired and the kitchen / study area is almost complete. Currently the study area is waiting on a few orders to come in from Drake Lumber in order for the final remaining tasks to be completed.
School Year / GPA Draft: Next week is the start of Mid-terms at Northwest Missouri State University, in coming weeks the executive board will know where the active chapter stands with grades and if any modifications need to be made to the GPA Draft program in order to meet and potentially exceed our expectations.
Homecoming: We'll be entering a big float into the highly competitive portion of this year's homecoming. The float however, will be minimalistic and will be used as a display of our philanthropic efforts thus far for the year to demonstrate how much good can be done in the local community by designating your efforts toward a better good rather than creating a traditional float.
Scroll: Frater Trevor Scott signed scroll this past Monday at our first formal meeting of the semester. Frater Scott is scroll number 1570. Trevor did not sign scroll last semester because his GPA was under the required 2.3 mark but has since raised it to meet those requirements. The new requirement that was passed by the chapter a few weeks ago is now a 2.5 semester GPA in order to sign scroll.

Kansas City Golf & Bearcat Football – held on October 2nd
The TKE Golf Outing (Kansas City) and Bearcat Watch Party later at the Gran Faloon was a smashing success. I didn't attend the watch party but the Bearcats kicked some MO Western ass 42-0. Here a list of golfing attendees: Jeff Taylor 784, Ron Beaver 858, Jason Peregrine 1278, Jason Washam 1320, Brian Carrol 1354, B...rent Steffens 1384, Ricky Boedecker 1390, Todd Steffens from the KN Chapter of Rockhurst University.....and for anyone curious, the team of Beaver-Washam kicked everyone's butt with a team score of 73.
Northwest @ UNO football game – held on September 25th
Approximately 15-20 TKE DN alumni and friends gathered for dogs and drinks prior to the Bearcats laying the smack-down on the UNO Mavericks 58-23 in front of a "home" crowd of a few thousand Bearcat fans Saturday, September 18th in Omaha, NE. The event was cool and windy for the mid-September matchup but perfect weather for football. Some of the Fraters in attendance included Ron Beaver, Dan Barnett, Tom Drustrup, Vince Tobin, Dan Schuler as well as a number of others. Several TKE lady friends and other NWMSU fans also joined the fun atop the UNO parking garage next to the stadium. A few pictures will be posted soon to both TKE DN Facebook groups.

BY AMANDA CANNON Missourian Reporter
Like many students, Ryan Jackson wakes up not wanting to go to class, fights the rush for a parking space that will not earn him a ticket and plops into his seat just as roll is being taken. Jackson may seem like a typical senior, but there is a catch. With his fulltime class load, organizations and owning his own business, Jackson has his hands full.
Last summer, Jackson started his own company, Info Sharkz, where he designs websites and graphic designs from his home. In the last couple of months, the company also started advertising.
"Flame Lit Media is the face of the company, the name you see on my business cards," Jackson said of the company.
He came up with the idea to start his own company three years ago and decided to move forward with the idea.
"I got bored doing the same thing over and over so I decided it was time for a change," Jackson said.
The company was not an easy idea to get started; it took time for everything to fall into place.
"For the legal stuff, such as the tax ID, it took about a month to get set up," Jackson said. "The legal documents cost around $800 to $1,000 up front to be approved. The whole company would have cost around $10,000 to get started, if I didn't already have my computer equipment."
Jackson is a full-time student with a 15 credit hour class load, involved with TKE, SIFE and is the President of Future Business Leaders of America, but he still finds the time for his company.
"I am very fortunate to have very flexible hours," Jackson stated. "If I need to work at three in the morning, I can, as long as I get the websites done."
Jackson takes pride in his company and also in the organizations he is actively apart of. He is the Historian for TKE, which consumes much of his time.
"I don't know how he does it," Ray Orf, a senior member of TKE, said about Jackson. "I mean I know what it is like to have a full class load, but to have that on top of being involved with many different organizations and having a business to run, it's crazy. I don't know where he finds his energy for it all."
Most of Jackson's clients are located in Missouri. He is currently updating his website, in hopes it will generate a bigger cliental base. Jackson works to pay off his college classes, so the more clients he has the better.
"I started out paying myself depending on the way the business went, but now I pay myself with a salary base, since there is a good history of the company. I maintain a healthy living and so all my college expenses get paid solely with what I make from my business. My parents are glad they don't have to pay for it," Jackson said with a smile.
The company keeps him busy and he continuously uses the information he learns in class. He is the only one working right now that designs the websites.
"The most websites I have designed in a month is about four or five small websites," Jackson said. "On an average though, it is more like one or two a month. I am a perfectionist when it comes to working on my business so right now I only pay one employee who manages the accounts I have."
Jackson says his parents are very proud of him for what he has done with himself during college. The company was a great start up idea to pave his interest. Flame Lit Media is successfully making money to support him but there it is not yet making enough to hire more employees.
"If it doesn't work out in the in the long run I would like to work for Microsoft or Google or something like that," Jackson said about his future plans.

After graduating from Benton High School in St. Joseph, MO, Frater Burrell left for Northwest, which he attended from 1959 to 1963. At Northwest, he attained a B.S. in Biology/Secondary Ed, with a minor in Physical Education. While at Maryville, he met and married his wife Sherry, to whom he is still married today. Her father owned the JC Penney's store in Maryville for many years and Sherry was a baton twirler and member of the Northwest marching band. They have raised three children -- Steve, Denise, and Stacy.
After graduation, Rod and family moved to Atlantic, Iowa, where he taught Biology and Earth Sciences while coaching track. From there, they relocated back to Missouri, remaining in Columbia at Hickman High and Rock Bridge from 1963 to 1978. While at Rock Bridge, he coached the men's Cross Country team to a Conference Championship, and also introduced the very first female runner to an all male team – who lettered in 1972. In 1979, Frater Burrell changed careers and joined 'The Group, Inc' - a real estate sales organization in Loveland, Colorado. He retired from real estate sales in 2008, but still holds his real estate license today.
Rod fondly recalls the very first years at 222 West Cooper Street, improvements to the house to make it suitable for fraternity life, the first House Mother, Mrs. Holman, and Mrs. Potter, their cook. He held the office of Hypophetes and with the assistance of his mother, helped to organize the first Daughters of Diana chapter. Rod sites family, TKE, and building his real estate business as all sharing common elements of what was learned in college through his fraternity experiences.

DID YOU KNOW - WHAT IS A TOP TKE CHAPTER?
Delta Nu has won the prestigious Top TKE Chapter Award seven times in our 56 year history! You already know that Delta Nu won a Most Improved Chapter Award in 2010, but did you know that NWMSU Tekes have been awarded the highest honor of Top TKE Chapter for the years 1964, 1975, 1977, 1980, 1993, 2007 and 2008, and many times over chapters from much larger NCAA Division I schools? Aside from our first six years, Delta Nu has won a Top TKE Chapter award in every decade of its existence. To see a list of awards and recipients, please visit http://www.nwtke.com/content/delta-nu-museum.
To be considered for Top TKE Chapter, a chapter must qualify for at least four Excellence Awards (recruitment, chapter size, community service, alumni relations, academic success, and extracurricular activities). These sound like broad categories, but they all contribute toward a successful chapter.
When handing out Top TKE Chapter awards, TKE International looks at such criteria as candidate initiation rate, chapter size in relation to other campus fraternities, member training and education, chapter-sponsored campus- and community-based service projects, strength of alumni organization, grade point averages of actives and initiates and participation in intramural sports and leadership positions in campus organizations.
The above criteria fall under the title of “Key Result Areas” that TKE International looks at very closely in the final determination of Top TKE Chapter awards.
Delta Nu Chapter continues to flourish thanks to a strong tradition of membership recruitment, scholastic excellence and community service. To inquire how you can help with the chapter and alumni association’s success and development, please contact Brad Shelton, 651 at alumni@nwtke.com.
