Spring 2011 Delta Nu Review
Alumni Board of Advisors President’s Report – Mark Witthar, 853
Fraters of Delta Nu, On January 10, 1899 a great fraternity was born and some 56 years ago on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University one of the finest chapters was started! On behalf of the men of the Board of Alumni Advisors of the Delta-Nu Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon I want to provide all of you an update on the chapter on this day that celebrates the beginning of our great fraternity.
We had another strong year of recruiting new members taking over 25 new pledges. These new members go through an extensive program of training to make sure we have young men in the fraternity that understand our ideals. We continue to do well in terms of rent collection which allows us to pay all our bills AND set aside funds for ongoing repairs and improvements. Additionally we were able to make a capital improvement by building a boardroom/study room for the active chapter. Those of you that returned at homecoming saw our beautiful new room. Our next project will be to upgrade the kitchen area to make it more functional.
On the alumni front, our alumni support has never been better, although we still have a huge opportunity to do more. At present we have 142 men that have joined our association. With approximately 1500 alumni we should be able to do much better than that! Dues are $50 for one year, $75 for two or $105 for three! This money will only be used to assist with alumni programs. Our goal is to re-connect old friends and provide guidance to the active chapter.
As you can see many good things continue to happen at Delta Nu both on the active side and with the alumni and I want to thank you all of your continued support.
On this anniversary of our great fraternity and on behalf of the entire Board of Advisors, we wish everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous 2011.
Yours in the Bond, Mark B. Witthar, #853, Chairman, Board of Advisors - Delta-Nu Chapter, mwitthar@ford.com

IN THIS ISSUE
Happy New Year Fraters! As we enter 2011, we find the momentum generated in 2010 continuing. The house, chapter and alumni association are all in great shape and Homecoming 2010 was the largest attended in recent years. The February 1st scholarship application deadlines for the Active and Pete Greve scholarships are also fast approaching. We’re also looking at a number of projects for the house as well as to restore as many Composites that we can and to redesign the Delta Nu website. The active chapter has started Rush and also elected its new officers for the year and will soon be starting pledgeship. They had a great 2010, winning five awards from TKE National. Also, if you would like a TKE “Rah Rah” jacket, check out page 13.
And finally, if you have any news or events that you’d like to share, email us at alumni@nwtke.com and we’ll spread the word!
House Report – Kevin Smith, 932, kevins@npgco.com
The first semester ended with only two months of outstanding rent uncollected, which is expected to be collected in January once school resumes. Since the mortgage payment has been paid in advance through August, rents yet to be collected from the second semester should easily cover operating costs for the remainder of the year through the start of next school year in August, barring any significant emergency outlay of cash. We have $4,000 in emergency cash reserves - which is not nearly enough for a structure of this size and scope. In addition to a few improvements, we will try to add to the emergency reserves with surpluses from remaining operating cash. Last spring when leases were signed, we collected $300 from each of the men living in the house as a damage deposit. This money is kept separate from the other funds. If the room is in the same condition when they leave as when they moved in, that money will be returned to the student at the end of the spring semester. If not, this money will be kept for needed repairs.
I’ve enjoyed the last four years working with the BOA. I think some good plans were implemented to stabilize the house finances and I am confident that those that remain on the board will be diligent in making sure we remain solvent. Please consider stepping up and taking your turn at providing alumni leadership in whatever capacity you are comfortable. If you’d like to talk with me regarding this position, I can be reached at (816) 205-1032.
Y.I.T.B., Kevin Smith, 932, Alumni Property Manager
2011 Alumni/Active Work Weekend - July 16th
An Active/Alumni work weekend is planned for July 16, 2011 at the TKE House to paint all the suites, repair and replace the 11-year-old carpet in the rooms and hallways and provide general maintenance and overall upkeep of the fraternity house. Special projects may include installation of a fire pit, outside landscaping and tree planting and the building of a storage facility near the house along with work on a new TKE sign out front.
All actives and alumni are encouraged to join this event and share their skills. More information will be distributed in the monthly emails and other postings on the web site so check back often for more details.

Composite Resurrection Project - Bob Nielsen, 640,nielsenbd1@yahoo.com
Fraters, as you are aware, when 222 W. Cooper was lost that dreadful night, most of the composites were destroyed. The few that were saved or salvaged sustained damage ranging from minor to severe.
With the past groundwork of Fraters Tim Golden, Ryan Jackson, Mike Reiff and others, I will be continuing this worthwhile project to bring the composites back to 555 W. 9th. In the following months, it is my goal to have originals, restorations, and reproductions from as many years as possible lining the hallways.
Your help is requested and required. Do you personally possess an original or a reproduction? Would you donate or permit me to make a reproduction for framing and hanging? If so, please contact me at nielsenbd1@yahoo.com and inform me of the year(s) that you possess and of the condition. I ask that you respond ASAP therefore I will know what our inventory is and what years may need to be secured through other possible channels.
"The difference between rental property and a Fraternity house is the composite. These images bind one generation of Frater with another. This history of what went before us and our mark that we were there gives the house its meaning."
Thanking you in advance for your consideration and cooperation. Y.I.T.B., Bob Nielsen, 640 - Lenexa, Kansas

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION - Brad Shelton, 651,brad.shelton@nwtke.com
One year ago, we began the new Delta Nu Alumni Association membership drive. In that year, we have received annual dues totaling more than $12,245 from 142 Alumni from across the U.S.! These dues go to fund web site development, produce the bi-annual newsletter, produce monthly e-Newsletters like this one and maintain the Delta Nu Frater Database, not to mention supporting the fund raising efforts of the TKE Scholarship, the Pete Greve Incoming Freshman Scholarship, the Special Projects Fund and the Capital Improvements Fund. Just as important, your annual dues support the efforts of the Social Committee to bring events to cities near you! So that we have a continual balance of money to support these efforts each year, we are allocating the membership dues over the next three years and we hope to add an additional 50 new members each year.
At the annual meeting in Kansas City on February 5th, we will put before the membership a revenue and expense budget proposal for their review and approval. The chart to the rights shows the DNAA financials for 2010 - 2011.
A few weeks ago, an electronic survey was delivered to the membership to determine what we should take on next. Once the results are compiled, we will review our current activities to determine what more we can do to improve our services.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FUNDS
Special Projects Fund – Scott Keilbey, 666, skeilbey@tnemec.com
The Special Projects fund recently made arrangements and provided funds for four actives to attend the TKE Education Foundation Midwest Regional Leadership Conference in Kansas City the weekend of February 5th, 2011. The attendees will be selected after officer elections on January 17th. Future Special Projects fundraising projects will be announced this Spring.
Through the TKE Educational Foundation, the Special Projects Fund exists to provide assistance to undergraduate members for educational opportunities, expenses like study facilities, leadership seminars or conferences, such as the Regional Leadership Conferences or Conclave. Every year, we’d like to be able to subsidize all or part of the registration fees or travel expenses for Fraters to attend these or other conferences, not to mention update the educational resources in the house, but we need to increase the size of the fund to be able to continue to do this. Contributions to this fund are tax deductible, through the TKE Educational Fund. For more information, please go to the Delta Nu website to the Alumni page and then to Donation Opportunities.
TKE House Capital Improvements – Steve Moss, 927, semoss@mchsi.com
As we close out 2010 and look back at our accomplishments, we can feel proud of all that was done -- it was a good year. Over the past year, with your help, we were able to complete the following projects:
· Spring and Summer TKE house work days: alumni, actives and TKE parents giving lots of time and effort toward improvements at the house
· The recent addition of the new TKE Board Room and Enclosed Kitchen
· Installation of The Wiles Family Bell in the patio area at the house
As we begin 2011, we hope to continue our momentum from last year with some more great projects for the house. With your help, we can begin phase two of the kitchen renovation as well as look at other projects on our list. Short term projects under review include building a “Frater’s TV lounge” on the second floor, installing and restoring the trophy cases from the 222 W. Cooper house, updating and general enhancements to the chapter room, as well a few other ideas. The hope is that with the proper support, we can complete some of these enhancements in 2011.
We also are going to begin planning for some longer-term projects. In early 2011, we will begin constructing a five-year Capital Improvement Plan. One project already on the list is the need for added space on the property for social events and homecoming construction and storage. This is fast becoming a high priority.
We are making the official call to any interested TKE alumni with woodworking and restoration experience to help with restoration of several items that were saved from the 222 West Cooper TKE house. Did you know that we still have the front porch columns, the trophy case and newel post? Our hope is to restore some of these items and incorporate them into the new TKE house. If you, or someone you know is experienced with this type of work or just interested in helping with this project, please contact Frater Steve Moss at semoss@mchsi.com or 573- 489-5029.
As always, Alumni Fraters are encouraged to help support future projects at the house through the TKE House Capital Improvement Fund. Please make checks to: Delta Nu Alumni Association and send them to: Chris Holder, DNAA Treasurer, 12480 South Greenwood, Olathe, KS 66062. Please put Capital Improvements Fund into the memo line of the check.
Ongoing recognition levels for cumulative contributions specifically for the TKE House Capital Improvement Fund are recognized at the following levels: $500, $1000, $5000 and $10,000
Please help us reach our annual $15,000 goal in 2011!
As Tekes, you all remember: “Many men as One Man.”
If everyone contributes annually $50 or $100 we can really make some great additions to our house. Thanks for a great 2010! Let’s make it an even better 2011!
Yours in the bond, Steve Moss, 927- Chairman-TKE House Capital Improvements Committee

2011 Peter J. Greve Memorial TKE Alumni Scholarship, Bruce Barlow, 533, tkedn533@comcast.net
Wow!! The year has just flown by. Applications for the 2011-12 Peter J. Greve Memorial TKE Alumni Scholarship are due February 1st, and we are hoping for a large number of applicants this year. The winner(s) should be posted on the web site by March 1st. Thank you all for your participation in encouraging students to attend Northwest.
If you have a son or daughter, relative or deserving young adult from your community attending NWMSU next year, check out the Scholarship requirements and application from http://www.nwtke.com/content/scholarship Remember, the applicant MUST be nominated by a Delta Nu TKE alumnus. The 2010 -2011 award was given to Stanton (IA) HS senior Edward Oster, Jr., the son of Delta Nu alumni Edward Oster, 986.
While on the website, you can find more information about chapter house improvements and the 2010 homecoming celebration and catch up on all the latest news. You can also get updated on Fraters' lives since college and even locate long lost pledge brothers.
Year end also means tax time so please consider a tax deductible contribution when you do your 2010 tax planning. Since the fund’s inception, we have awarded scholarships to three outstanding high school seniors. The Scholarship fund is halfway to reaching Pete's goal of being self-sustaining. To help achieve Pete's goal, simply complete the form below and mail in your contribution.
Diagnosed with terminal cancer, instead of sympathy, Pete Greve started the Scholarship now deservedly bearing his name. After almost two years, the newscast of the last weekend at Pete's (aptly named "Frat Brothers Fix Home for ailing brother") is still so popular, KETV in Omaha continues to run it! I encourage you see Pete one week before his passing at http://www.ketv.com/news/18936060/detail.html
If you are looking to donate through Northwest Missouri State, to either the Peter J. Greve Memorial TKE Alumni Scholarship, or the TKE Delta Nu Actives Scholarship, please visit www.nwmissouri.edu, and then go Giving and Online Giving. In the process of completing the Online Giving form, remember to look for TKE – Delta Nu Actives Scholarship or TKE – Peter J. Greve Memorial Scholarship. Hint: if you give $50 or more to one of these funds, you automatically become a member of the Northwest Missouri State Alumni Association.

2011 is finally upon us with many alumni events planned! Please consider attending one or more events this year as a way to reconnect with past friends and alumni. Upcoming events include bowling in KC and Des Moines, “An Evening at The Quaff” in K.C., the NCAA men’s basketball tournament via ESPN.com and the summer golf tournament in Maryville.

Iowa may have won the bowl game, but will Mizzou win the bowling tournament? The 2nd annual traveling trophy award will reside with the winning team until next year—that in itself is worth the price of admission!

2010 Homecoming Recap - Tad Trecker, 739; trekwith@yahoo.com
Thanks to everyone that was able to attend Homecoming this year. I think most everyone that attended Homecoming would agree that it was a huge success. Here’s a brief summary of the weekend:
The weekend started with an Open House reception with approximately 40 in attendance. Saturday started with a tailgate cookout at the house, followed by the Wiles’ Bell Dedication Ceremony, in which a bell was dedicated in the name of the late Frater Dick and Marcella Wiles. Several members of the Wiles’ family were in attendance and commented how touched and moved they were by the ceremony and time and detail committed to the project. The ceremony concluded with a slide show of Dick and Marcella's life together, created by Frater Hal Martens of Chugiak, AK. Thank you Frater Martens for your time and effort. It was a lovely look into the lives of two special people close to our fraternity.
After the Bell Dedication, Board of Advisor Chairman and Vice-Chairman, Fraters Mark Witthar and Brad Shelton gave presentations on the state of the Delta Nu Alumni Association. The reports were very positive with membership enrollment close to 120 and a very positive financial position. Frater Kenneth Hamilton, Prytanis, gave a ‘State of the Chapter’ address and showed once again that Delta Nu is strong and getting stronger every day. To highlight the hard work and continuing effort of the active chapter, Frater Mike Russell, Associate Regional Director from TKE International Headquarters presented Delta Nu with five awards including Most Improved Chapter for year 2009 – 2010. Finally, Frater Jeff Borchardt, CEO and President of the Kansas City Board of Trade, gave a very passionate and inspiring key note address. The centerpiece of his message was a plea to actives to respect our fraternity traditions and be vigilant caretakers of the Chapter House, so it may be passed on to future generations of Delta Nu Tekes.
We hoped for 150 to attend and we counted 158!
· Lowest scroll number attending belonged to Frater Rod Burrell #187 of Loveland, CO
· Farthest distance traveled: Frater Hal Martens #735, Chugiak, AK - 3,408 land miles. (Good thing he took the plane.)
If you were there, you were part of the resurrection of an old tradition and took away 1,000 memories to cherish. If you didn't make it this year, put it on your calendar for next year. Homecoming 2011 is slated forOctober 22nd. You won't want to miss the party when 200 of your brothers, family and friends show up to see you.
2010 Fall Classic Recap
The Arrowhead tailgate in Kansas City for the 2010 Fall Classic football game between Northwest and Pittsburg State was a big success with 50-75 alumni and actives participating.

TKE “Did You Know” – Dennis Cox, 659, dennisc@northwestmissouri.com
Did You Know… that the word “fraternity” is derived from the Latin word “fraternitas”, meaning a feeling of love between two brothers, or in the more abstract, a deep friendship between people. The rigid discipline of early American colleges eventually led to the need for fraternities. Young students were subjected to inadequately heated rooms, poor lighting, meager rations of bad food, and hundreds of rules and punishments for each. Each class was united against every other class and all classes were united against faculty and authority figures. A spirit of camaraderie developed among students that would lead to a more dedicated and idealistic form of friendships that would be called “fraternities.” Phi Beta Kappa was born in 1776, along with the United States, at William and Mary, and is recognized as the first American society to bear a Greek letter name. The principal objection to fraternities in the early days was their secrecy, and many went underground to avoid harassment from faculty, who acted sometimes as police detectives to root out what they saw as challenges to authority. In a reverse twist, fraternities began inviting professors to become members and faculty opposition gradually disappeared.
