TKE Fraternity at NWMSU Awarded with Highest Honor
Top TKE Chapter Awarded for 2011-2012 School Year
The Delta Nu Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) at Northwest Missouri State University received the highest honor amongst TKE chapters nationwide for the 2011-2012 academic school year – Top TKE Chapter. This is the third Top TKE Chapter award the fraternity has earned in the past five years, making it one of the top chapters nationwide. TKE Fraternity only awarded 15 Top TKE Chapter awards out of a total of 290 chapters.
Criteria for Top TKE Chapter measures individual chapters on students’ success in academics, community involvement, university extracurricular activities, alumni relations, and overall strength of the student organization. Most notably, the men of TKE–Delta Nu logged over 7,200 hours of community and philanthropic service, raising over $3,200 for the Maryville Humane Society, St. Jude’s Hospital, Children’s Miracle Network and other organizations. As an act of pride and respect for campus life at NWMSU, the Tekes helped re-paint buildings and clean up residence halls and parking lots. The chapter organized and participated in a total of 13 service activities throughout the year, living up to the fraternity’s motto “Better Men for a Better World.”
“Although the men of TKE–Delta Nu stay focused on scholastic, collegiate and fraternal goals, we feel a sense of responsibility to our campus and community,” stated Chris Fuller, NWMSU Senior and TKE–Delta Nu Chapter President.
Delta Nu Tekes stayed very involved in campus life throughout the year, holding 11 diverse campus leadership positions, including IFC President, Student Ambassadors, Residence Assistants, Student Senate, volunteer teachers, and honor society members. As part of ongoing character development, the chapter had 24 attendees at both non-TKE and TKE-focused leadership conferences. All while participating in a total of 10 intramural sports leagues, claiming four championships in team sports.
“TKE has always prided itself on having a diverse group of men. From intramural champions to Student Ambassadors to Northwest athletes, the chapter continues to bring together men, not for wealth, rank or honor, but for personal worth and character,” explained Gunner Sumy, NWMSU Senior and TKE–Delta Nu Rush Chairman.
Despite a tragic fire to the TKE Fraternity House in August 2011, the fraternity found a way to excel as a student-organization as well as an alumni-lead fraternity. The Delta Nu Alumni Association (DNAA) worked diligently during the Fall 2011 semester to rebuild and remodel the 32-man residence. While the students rallied to find temporary housing on campus and throughout the community, the DNAA not only reconstructed damaged portions of the house, they made student safety a top priority. Additions of a state-of-the-art fire suppression sprinkler system and property-wide security monitoring system were installed to help to deter vandalism, theft and uninvited guests.
“Since Maryville authorities suspect arson as the cause of the fire, the alumni felt a deep responsibility to rebuild a safer residence for the students, and make it a place all Tekes can be proud to call home,” commented Mark Witthar, TKE–Delta Nu Board of Advisors President.
